Jazz

Recently, my love of Jazz music has been renewed. I could say that is out of the frustration of current music and also my boredom of summer and my need to just chill but I think it's more than that. Jazz(until the death of Miles Davis) was the most inventive style of music ever on this earth. The best thing about Jazz is that the pioneers of it all learned classical music and used its structures to advance an art born out of slavery. Hip-Hop which is a child of blues and jazz at its best is only a little brother to music of Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Theolonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzie Gillespie, Duke Ellington, Sarah Vaughn, Billie Holiday, George Gershwin, Louis Armstrong, and all the legends of jazz. Hip-Hop is improvisational like jazz but as of lately it lacks the slickness, soul, and structure of a great jazz composition. Instead of evolving into a grater artform it has devolved. Its a million rappers and producers who don't understand structure and the importance of their work. It is no question that some of the greatest rappers and producers are fans of jazz and sometimes the children of jazz musicians themselves. Nas's father, Olu Dara is a jazz musician. Rakim's parents were jazz musicans, Lupe Fiasco's father was a jazz musician, along with many others. The fans of jazz make hip-hop better. While Jay-Z and Kanye have the most swag out of any genre they understand that they cannot dress or be more cool than a Miles Davis, a John Coltrane, or a Dizzie Gillespie. Jazz is the original cool. Jazz caused a shift in American Culture. It made it where white kids start to dress and look up to African Americans. That is something lost today. Also, Jazz is such a wide collection of sounds that no musical genre has ever come close to it. Jazz is the greatest artform America ever made. It shifted the worlds eyes to music created from the children of former slaves. Jazz is American history. So in honor of it I want to include two downloads to introduce you to jazz.
